“We’re on track to move in May, looking forward to it,” says Lt. Col. Malcom Earles. ” There’s a lot of excitement building, a lot of pressure to get things done on time, but we’re up to the challenge.”
Lt. Col. Earles is 3rd Army deputy chief of staff for the strategic relocation. He says the 3rd Army’s transfer from Fort McPherson in Atlanta to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter is on schedule to begin May 2011.
I tell you, everyone in Sumter has been fantastic. I have been greeted with open arms and with excitement. So it’s kind of fun, you know.
The move will bring 1,200 soldiers, plus about 100 civilians and 100 contractors.
The average salary of those 1,400 people is around $80,000 a year. And the total, just salary impact in the area is right at around $119 million.
Atlanta’s loss is definitely Sumter’s gain. Earles explains:
There were four major headquarters in Atlanta, that most people didn’t realize were there. And that post has been there since 1885 and it has a huge impact on South Atlanta. I don’t think they realize what they’re losing.
Among the 1,400 soldiers and staff, the unit will bring 218 majors, 192 lieutenant colonels and 58 colonels.
