The Charleston NAACP held its 94th annual Freedom Fund Banquet over the weekend. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was the keynote speaker.
National politics was the focus, with Pelosi being the highest of the high-profile guests, which included U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, NAACP President and Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Todd Jealous and Steve Benjamin Columbia’s recently-elected, first black mayor.
In a low-key address that mostly emphasized recent accomplishments, Pelosi said the fabric of the middle class is frayed, and she blamed unemployment and poverty increases on “the failed policies of the previous eight years.”
