Summerville Town Council is set to hold the final vote on one portion of Councilman Walter Bailey’s illegal immigration ordinance. Although town council turned down the rental portion of the ordinance, it will take up a final vote on the business license portion that does not allow illegal immigrants to legally work in the town. In last month’s vote, Bailey says the council did not agree on the inclusion of the rental portion because of a fear of litigation.
The reason behind it was that there were threats of lawsuits by the ACLU and some Latino advocacy groups and they basically intimidated a majority of the council into thinking that this was going to cost a small fortune in attorney’s fees, so that was the motivation.
State law already requires business licenses, preventing illegal immigrants from working in the state. Bailey says he expects it to pass for Summerville’s own ordinance as well.
