Charleston County Council has a new concept in mind for the Interstate-526 extension. Transportation Secretary Buck Limehouse has pressed Charleston County Council to make some decisions and plans for expanding Interstate-526. According to a recent report by the Post and Courier, a new plan mapped out by county council would take out a portion of the original plan. Initially, council wanted to extend the highway to James and Johns Islands from West Ashley, near Charleston.
The new plan would only extend the expressway to Johns Island and not connect to the James Island Connector. This new idea would please some citizens of James Island who have spoken out against the plan, saying it would cause too much traffic and noise. Some supporters of the new concept say it would reduce the cost of the extension and give more money to some local roads. The original plan costs $489 million.
