Incumbent Fifth District Congressman Democrat John Spratt is facing a heated challenge as Republican Senator Mick Mulvaney is working to deny Spratt a 15th term in Congress. The candidates faced off in a debate aired on ETV Sunday.
Mulvaney says the Reinvestment and Recovery Act, the stimulus bill that Spratt supported, has failed miserably in creating jobs, especially in the area of infrastructure improvements.
Spratt counters that the stimulus act is working and has created or saved millions of jobs and 14,000 projects nationwide related to road and bridge upgrades are underway because of stimulus dollars.
Mulvaney contends that the financial reform bill went too far.
Spratt supported the legislation. He says strong measures needed to be taken to save the economy from the brink of collapse.
