The Port of Charleston is reporting its best quarter since 2008. Container volume from July to September was up 18 percent from the same period last year. State Ports Authority President and CEO Jim Newsome says,”Charleston’s back on track and this growth is very encouraging.” Newsome says the two Asia shipping services began earlier this year at the Charleston port, increasing the port’s volume.
More than 20,000 companies across the United States rely on the Port of Charleston to access overseas markets. As for the future, several major industries are expected to generate new business for the port, including BMW’s newest X3 assembly line and Tire Kingdom’s new distribution center.
