Authorities say a South Carolina Highway Trooper shot and killed a man who attacked the officer during a traffic stop on I-26 in Laurens County, Thursday.
The Highway Patrol called in deputies for backup during a traffic stop for reckless driving. When a deputy along with Trooper Lance Cpl. J. K. Teaster approached the car from each side, they noticed an open container and arrested the passenger without incident. However, when Teaster attempted to arrest the driver, he tried running and fought back with a sharp object. Teaster fired on the man, wounding him.
The suspect, 22 year old Jose Escotto of Elgin, was air-lifted to the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he later died. Jose Sanchez, age 21, the passenger in the car, was arrested on various charges. Teaster, who suffered a minor injury to the neck, has been placed on non-patrol duties while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
