Four Greenville County deputies have been cleared after wounding a man during a gambling raid earlier this month. Aaron Awtry, age 72, was shot and injured after he shot and wounded Deputy Matthew May.
Officials had gone to the home to serve a gambling warrant, when Awtry fired shots through the door hitting Deputy May. Deputies returned fire and Awtry was also shot.
Sheriff Steve Loftis said the deputies were following department policy.
In this situation they had the right to return fire through the door because Deputy May’s life was in danger. And also, the deputies that returned fire, their life was in danger, because they did not know what to expect or what else was coming through that door.
Awtry was charged with attempted murder, weapons possession and gambling charges. A dozen other people in the home were ticketed for unlawful betting.
