An unusual robbery in Aiken County is attracting national attention. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office says Ricky New entered the Kent’s Corner convenience store brandishing a large stick. Deputies say he then attacked the clerk and stole an undisclosed amount of money. After leaving the store, he made his way to his getaway lawnmower.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Troy Ellwell says it didn’t take long for deputies to track New down.
Never seen anything quite like this one. I’ve seen some strange cases, but a getaway vehicle as a lawnmower. That doesn’t take a whole lot of thought to figure out that you’re not going to get too far on it.
New lives close to the store and Ellwell said the clerk recognized him during the robbery, even though he wore a towel over his face.
As soon as he left the store, the clerk said, “That was Ricky New.” It was pretty obvious that they knew exactly who he was.
Ellwell says his office has been hearing from all sorts of media outlets about the case.
I’m getting a good amount of calls on this. It seems that everybody is taking it as a pretty unusual case and something you don’t see every day… Ricky’s getting to be a star out of his criminal career that he started this morning.
New is charged with armed robbery and assault and batttery first degree.
