First Congressional District Congressman-elect Tim Scott says he will not join the Congressional Black Caucus. Last month, Tim Scott became the first black Republican elected into Congress from South Carolina since Reconstruction. Although his race became a highlight of his win in news headlines, Scott says that’s not the reason for his victory. This week, the Charleston-native said he will not accept the invitation to join the predominately Democratic Congressional Black Caucus.
Scott says, “My campaign was never about race. My campaign has been about themes that unite all Americans, restoring the American dream. The black community, like all communities, will benefit when businesses can use their profits to hire more workers instead of paying higher taxes.” He adds that while he recognizes the efforts of the CBC and he says he appreciates their invitation, he will not be joining at this time.
The CBC is a political foundation with the aim of developing leaders, informing policy and educating the public.
