The race is now set for the January election of a new sheriff in Orangeburg County.
Leroy Ravenell, a commander with the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s department has won the Democratic nomination for sheriff. Ravenell garnered 5,634 votes, over twice as many as his closet opponent. Retired Sergeant Russell Collier came in second with 2037 votes in the race featuring five candidates.
A total of 9,212 people voted in Tuesday’s primary.
Ravanell will face Republican candidate Floyd Allen Hiott in the January 25 special election. The candidates are running to replace former Sheriff Larry Williams who died in September.
