A 16-year-old male student at the Academic Magnet High School in Charleston is in critical condition after he was involved in a fire-related incident. The Charleston County School of the Arts and Academic Magnet High School were both on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after the isolated fire-related incident. The student was first taken to the Medical University of South Carolina after the incident occurred, then transported to the Doctors Hospital burn center in Augusta.
Police say the student, Aaron Williams’ body is covered with burns, but they could not say whether or not the fire was intentionally set or not. North Charleston police do say the incident happened in the school’s parking lot, when Williams’ clothes were on fire as he ran toward the school’s entrance. School officials put out the fire and called police.
Charleston County Superintendent Nancy McGinley sent out a voicemail to the parents of all the students telling of the situation, with vague details. McGinley says the parents of that student were notified. The superintendent said no one else was harmed in the incident.
