An agency head under South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford will stay in the Cabinet under incoming governor Nikki Haley, but in a different agency.
The current chief of staff at the DJJ, Margaret Barber, will succeed Byars at the agency. Barber has worked with juvenile justice and youth services since the late 1960’s.
Haley called Byars “Mr. Fix-it” for DJJ and now wants him to find cost-saving solutions at the Corrections Department, which has been operating at a deficit. Haley touted the fact that Byars was the only agency head who did not ask for more money in the past state budget.
Both nominations require the approval of the state Senate.
