SC Superintendent of Education Jim Rex appeared on Charleston’s RadioFree Rocky D show this afternoon in order to keep a promise that he would visit the studio one more time before the end of his term on January 12.
Rex says the biggest problem still facing education–and virtually every state agency with the upcoming budget cuts–is funding. However, he says he supports the changes offered by charter schools.
I have been an advocate of charter schools from the get-go. We have doubled the number of students enrolled in charter schools in South Carolina since I’ve been in office. I think they can be a real incubator for change, and that you’re right, it does get parents more directly involved.
Reflecting on his concluding term and projecting the near future, Rex says:
You know, I didn’t intend to be a career politician. This was the first office I’d run for. I have hopefully made a positive difference. So, no plans for right now to run for anything else.
