Many employees of the SC Department of Transportation were pulled away from their families to work during the snow-filled Christmas weekend. Transportation Secretary Buck Limehouse reported that 44 of 46 counties had their maintenance crews working over the holiday plowing snow and placing anti-icing chemicals on roads and bridges.
Limehouse said approximately 1,650 employees logged over 21,000 hours over the Christmas weekend spreading 6,848 tons of salt, 1,543 tons of sand and 308,555 gallons of salt brine and calcium chloride–all so the roads could be safe for travel during a rare white Christmas in South Carolina.
Limehouse released a statement saying:
I want to extend to each of them my heartfelt appreciation for the job they do throughout the year, day in and day out, and especially for their extra effort over the Christmas holidays this year.
