During Governor Nikki Haley’s inauguration, before she was sworn in, a State Transport Police officer was taken off on a stretcher after collapsing on the Statehouse steps. House and Senate members stood up in a single-file line to make way for the paramedics to get by to carry the officer off.
The officer was identified as Lance Cpl. P.G. Gullett of Blythewood. A spokesman with the Department of Public Safety told the Associated Press that Gullett is fine, but will remain in a hospital overnight for observation.
The spokesman did not know what caused Gullett to collapse.
After about a 15-minute delay, Haley’s inauguration ceremony resumed.
