The town of Summerville has approved a ban on indoor smoking. The indoor smoking ban will exist in most businesses throughout Summerville, about 20 miles from Charleston.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Summerville Mayor Berlin Meyers was the deciding vote in favor of the ban at Wednesday’s meeting. The final vote was 3-3, deadlocking to pass the ordinance. After Meyers announced his vote, the crowd shouted and cheered in excitement.
Councilman Walter Bailey said the passing of the ban was “another nail in the coffin of freedom of choice.” But, Councilman Mike Dawson said freedoms have limits and secondhand smoke harms others.
