The dispute over whether to cut trees and extend the Hilton Head Island Airport’s runway is heading to court. Hilton Head town and county officials want to extend the airport’s runway to 900 feet because they say it is needed to ensure future business at the airport.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the issue has now gone to court after nearby St. James Baptist Church sued the town to attempt to block the tree-cutting. The lawsuit alleges the church’s appeal should have gone to the town planning commission and not the zoning board. Members of the church’s congregation say the runway extension would hinder the Gullah-Geechee community and businesses. Last month, the same church sued, stating in the lawsuit that the tree permit was incomplete.
