Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday morning for Sumter Police Corporal Charles “Chuck” Nesbitt, Jr. who was killed Friday afternoon when his patrol car was in a head-on collision on Highway 521. Nesbitt and Master patrolman James Cox were returning to Sumter from a prisoner transport when they collided with an SUV being driven by 43-year-old Michael Grundner of Cassat. His condition is unknown. Cox was treated for his injuries and released.
Nesbitt, age 39, was a 10-year veteran of the force and worked in the warrant division. Funeral services for Nesbitt are scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alice Drive Baptist Church in Sumter. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home, also in Sumter.
Police Chief Patty Patterson said this was the first time in the history of the Sumter Police Department that a Sumter Police officer has been killed in the line of duty. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
