Leroy Ravenell has won the special election for Sheriff of Orangeburg County. Ravenell defeated Republican Allen Hiott to fill the vacancy created by the death in September of Larry Williams who served as sheriff for 10 years. Only 18 percent of the county’s more than 57,000 registered voters cast ballots in the special election in which Ravenell garnered 8370 votes to Hiott’s 1996. There were six write-in candidates.
Ravenell has worked with the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Department for 21 years. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 4.
