Governor Nikki Haley has tabbed Duane Parrish to head the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Parrish has over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Parrish is founder and president of Charleston-based Premier Hospitality Group. Haley says Parrish has the right experience to give an added boost to the state’s tourism industry that generates billions of dollars annually.
Haley says once Parrish is confirmed, his first marching orders will be to find a private sponsor for South Carolina’s premiere PGA event at Hilton Head Island.
The PGA Tour’s annual stop on Hilton Head Island won’t be played in its traditional spot the week after the Masters. The Heritage is scheduled for April 18-24 this year, if the PGA Tour and local organizers can finalize a deal to assure the tournament can continue. It has been without a title sponsor since Verizon announced it would end its agreement with the tournament after the 2010 event.
Parrish says he is excited about grabbing the reins of PRT.
Parrish is currently chairman of the board of the South Carolina Hospitality Association.
