Charleston Mayor Joe Riley takes sides on the proposed expansion on a popular Lowcountry Interstate. Last year, the project manager took public input on the I-526 expansion that would extend the Lowcountry highway from West of the Ashley to James and Johns Islands. The project’s opponents say the $489 million used to fund the expansion could be used instead to expand the stretch of I-26 to I-95, helping ease the flow of traffic during a hurricane evacuation.
Now, months later, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley spoke to a neighborhood about the current plans. Riley says he supports completing 526 through the mainland of the city. He says it would create a new route for Boeing employees to get to and from work, provide a new hurricane evacuation route, and allow airport traffic to flow better.
Still no final decision has been made on the interstate expansion.
