Nearly $12.6 million in public funds were spent by state government last month using charge cards. And in the name of transparency, record of that spending is now available online.
“It’s important for us to have controls to protect against improper spending, and there’s no more cost-effective control than full transparency,” says Comptroller Richard Eckstrom.
Ekstrom began posting online card expenditures by state government–including state-supported colleges and universities–last spring in an effort to promote government transparency, especially in light of the Legislative Audit Council’s recent report revealing alarming numbers of agency employees misusing the charge cards.
To view the expenditures, visit cg.sc.gov. On the left side of the page, select the tab labeled, “State Government Spending Transparency.” Then select the “Charge Card Usage” link at the bottom of the page that opens. Monthly spending records are available back to January 2010.
