Congressman Jim Clyburn is promising that the Port of Charleston will receive the $400,000 needed for a harbor deepening study. The State Ports Authority wants to deepen the Charleston harbor at the Port of Charleston to 50 feet. SPA officials say the deepening project would bring in larger ships and more business to the port.
According to the Post and Courier, Clyburn says he has earmarked millions of dollars for the study, which should serve as proof on how he will receive help to pay for the $400,000 needed. In the past, Clyburn put three different earmarks in the Senate for the study, but they all died. The Democrat will not say how he plans to go about getting the money, but he says he will.
Currently, the president has no funding available for the project.
