SCE&G’s proposed coal-ash landfill that would be placed in Colleton County was rejected Thursday night at a public hearing in Walterboro. Last month, more than 100 people showed up to a meeting to protest the placement of the landfill in their town. They said it would pollute the air they breathe in, and it should be placed somewhere more rural. This week, about 30 people spoke at another hearing, also rejecting the landfill.
SCE&G wanted a zoning exception to create a 15-story-tall landfill of coal ash residue near the village of Canadys. However, the Colleton County Zoning Board voted against the landfill in a 2-2 vote on the issue. A majority was needed for the landfill to be built in Colleton County.
