A Columbia man was sentenced in federal court Thursday to six and a half years in prison for obtaining nearly $3 million by fraudulent means.
48-year-old Jerry Francis Wells, Jr. pleaded guilty in July of 2009 of embezzling over $2.9 million from UCI Medical Affiliates, Inc. that manages Doctors Care and other medical facilities in South Carolina and Tennessee.
While serving as UCI’s Chief Financial Officer, Wells used the company’s corporate credit card to pay personal expenses, submitted false expense reports for reimbursement, and submitted fraudulent check requests in order to finance construction work at his personal residence and to pay on personal credit card accounts.
After the plea agreement, Wells secured another job with another company. While working at his new job, Wells stole an additional $40,000. Along with his prison sentence, Wells was ordered to pay $2, 967,000 in restitution.
