Illegal immigration continues to be a hot button issue in the South Carolina Legislature as the Senate gave third reading to a bill pushed by GOP members Thursday.
The Senate worked late Wednesday night to hammer out a compromise measure that would not have to face the federal injunctions placed on a controversial Arizona bill that was cited for overstepping federal law. Led by GOP members of the Senate, the bill passed third reading by a 34-9 vote just before the body adjourned during the noon hour .
Several Democrats opposed the legislation– including Sen. Brad Hutto (D-Orangeburg), who said the Senate should be dealing with more pressing matters that affect South Carolina rather than attempting to do the federal government’s job.
The measure now moves to the House, where leaders there have made passing it a priority.
