South Carolina and Iowa officials complained the new date was still too early. According to national party rules, only Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina can hold their primaries before March.
South Carolina GOP chairwoman Karen Floyd rejected the new date in an appearance on MSNBC Monday.
Why would you reward a state for following the rules less? It’s kind of like speeding. If someone is speeding at 70 miles an hour and they’re breaking a 60 mile an hour law, they’re not going 90, but they’re still breaking the rule.
Floyd is still calling for the Republican National Committee to move its convention out of Tampa if Florida moves ahead with its primary date. Party leaders say that’s not likely to happen, however, since they’ve already begun planning for Tampa.
