Gov. Nikki Haley is known for calling members of her team and her cabinet “rock stars.” She was treated like a rock star herself at Monday’s Tea Party appearance, signing autographs and posing for pictures long after her speech was over.
Monday she shared the headlines with another up-and-coming Tea Party celebrity, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Bachmann has been a frequent visitor to the state to test support for the GOP presidential nomination.
She began her speech by praising Haley, telling an audience of about 500 (not including press, political staff), “Your governor has delivered for you…that concept that was birthed her heart to make sure that you would know how your elected officials are voting, she has done it for you. Give her congratulations.”
On the presidential race, Bachmann said that South Carolina has proven that it will back a woman leader. Barack Obama will surely be a “one-term president” she said as the crowd chanted along.
Despite being on the receiving end of Bachmann’s praise, the governor has not endorsed anyone for president yet. In her speech, Haley focused on a “to do” list for her supporters.
Haley’s appearance at last year’s, better- attended rally helped boost her position in the race for governor.
