Room and board rates are going up at Winthrop University for the 2011-2012 academic year. The board of trustees of the state university in Rock Hill voted Friday for a 8.6 percent increase in meal plans while residential room rates are going up 1.9 percent. Winthrop spokeswoman Rebecca Masters says the recent rise in food prices had a major effect on the university’s decision to raise its rates and the board wanted to do it in a timely fashion so students and families could plan ahead.
Masters says the new rates are scheduled to be set sometime in early June when a final decision will be made on tuition for 2011-2012. The board meets again on June 3.
