Sen. Vincent Sheheen (D-Kershaw) says citizens may think that state agency operations, policies and spending are regularly reviewed. That is not going on in our state, he says, and there is more that lawmakers can do.
He has strong Senate support for his bill to give the Legislature more oversight power over state agencies.
Bill S. 262 got unanimous Senate support on second reading. Sheheen says the measure makes the government more efficient and makes legislative committees work harder. He has also sponsored the bill to codify the duties of the new State Inspector General and says the two functions are not the same.
If the bill passes, it would go into effect next year.
