A multitude of festivals and events are occurring this weekend across South Carolina. One on tap in Walterboro is the Colleton County Rice Festival. The festival is a celebration of the rice planting heritage that helped to found Colleton County.
Festival chairman Jimmy Trippe says this is the 36th year for the event. “It’s your typical festival with arts and crafts and booths and we have a big fireworks display on Friday night, and a dance uptown with shagtime on Friday night.”
As well as dancing, there are vendors and, Tripp says, plenty of food. “We have the world’s biggest pot of rice. The Civitans, they cook the rice, it’s purlieu rice, is what we call it.” Walterboro expects to feed a crowd of about 10,000. “They run out every year, both days.”
There will be a beauty contest, golf tournament, tennis tournament, 5K Rice Run and, of course, a rice cooking contest. Tripp says they’ve added something new this year, a gospel sing on Sunday evening.
“The focus is on family entertainment,” says Tripp. The event takes place April 29-May 1.
