Governor Nikki Haley announced Thursday that she will appoint Major General Abraham J. Turner to serve as director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce. Turner, who previously served as the commanding general at Fort Jackson, replaces interim Director John Finan.
Haley made the announcement in a press conference at the Statehouse.
This not just about unemployment benefits, this is about training people and getting them back to work. And what better person than the man who trained the biggest facility the Army has and all of its soldiers. And so to see that happen and to see it put to work for South Carolina is a great day.
Gov. Haley complimented Finan for the job he has done with getting DEW up and running, and said Gen. Turner is the right person to take the agency to the next level.
I’m incredibly proud. I think he is going to make huge changes for South Carolina in terms of training our work force so that we can get people back to work, get that unemployment number down even further, and really make the people of South Carolina proud.
A native of South Carolina, Turner is a graduate of South Carolina State University. He currently serves as Chief of Staff of the United States Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. He is scheduled to retire from active duty at the end of this month.
