State tourism director Duane Parrish says the state is closer than ever to signing on a sponsor for The Heritage golf tournament. Governor Haley seconded that after her cabinet meeting. The Hilton Head event has lost sponsorship and top-ranked players in the past few years. She says she is not deterred.
We have worked tirelessly since the day I got into office, talking to potential companies that want to sponsor, what we would do to welcome them here, what they would get out of being invested in South Carolina, and what a great tournament it is. And Duane Parrish and I have been integrally involved in the meetings as well as before the Heritage, during the Heritage and now after the Heritage, and I will still say we will have a sponsor for the Heritage golf tournament.
Gov. Haley describes the effort of finding a multi-million dollar sponsor as “intense.”
But I am determined to prove this to the people of this state: tax dollars are not needed to provide for a golf tournament. What is needed is some efforts by the governor, the PRT director, and some companies to say, this is a great tournament–we’re going to keep it great.
Other cities, like Detroit and its automotive sponsorships, are trying to woo the PGA and the slot held by the tournament.
