The Spoleto Festival USA is celebrating its 35th season that begins this week in Charleston. The festival, that begins Friday, is one of the most internationally well-known arts festivals in the world. For 17 days the festival fills the city’s theaters, galleries, outdoor facilities and parks, among other historic landmarks.
As the festival celebrates 35 years this year, it will commemorate the 100th anniversary of founder Gian Carlo Menotti’s birth. To do that, one of three operas performed at the festival will be Menotti’s “The Medium,” marking the first time a piece from the founder will be performed since he left 18 years ago. Menotti died in 2007. Due to his achievements with Spoleto in Charleston, the city stands out for its deep sense of culture and art.
