A former Boiling Springs High School teacher is now facing a criminal charge after authorities accused her of having a sexual relationship with a 16 year-old student.
Duncan native Abby Kate McElhenny, 23, is charged with sexual battery with a student.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the relationship started around Christmas and lasted until May
We discovered this through a person contacting us about some inappropriate text messaging. We did a search warrant on the text message content on the phone and found that, in a five-day period, there were 391 text messages between these two.
Deputies say McElhenney has resigned her position as a Spanish teacher and turned herself in.
Spartanburg School District Two Superintendent Scott Mercer said McElhenny was also the varsity swim coach at the school.
Wright said the parents had signed a non-prosecution waiver, but he wanted to press charges against McElhenny for public safety reasons.
It’s my position that if we don’t charge this lady with this, then she could go somewhere else and teach and any other victims there may be (are) on me.
