An inmate in a Greenville detention center, who was waiting to be transported to a federal prison, is being charged with attempted escape and will now see more jail time.
United States Attorney Bill Nettles has announced that 29-year-old John David Hayes attempted an unusual escape when he had a female accomplice call the jail and impersonate an official of the United States Marshal’s Service.
Nettles says Hayes’ accomplice proceeded to advise the detention center that Hayes had served his time and was to be released.
Police say she also called the local Marshal’s Office in a second attempt to get Hayes out of prison. They say that she used an Internet site that allows a person to call one number and make it appear it is coming from another.
Officials say both of her attempts failed and Hayes will now have additional jail time added to his original 30 month sentence.
