A longtime police veteran has been confirmed as South Carolina’s head cop.
The state Senate Tuesday unanimously confirmed Mark Keel as head of the State Law Enforcement Division. He replaces Reggie Lloyd, who will step down on Thursday.
Keel worked at SLED for nearly 30 years before becoming the new director at the Department of Public Safety in 2008. He took over at an agency at DPS that faced federal investigation after several videos surfaced of Highway Patrol officers abusing suspects, using racial slurs, and committing civil rights violations. He is credited with helping turn that agency around.
He will take over SLED on Thursday.
