Three people were arrested and a large moonshine operation in Spartanburg County was shut down Thursday. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said this is one of the largest stills ever found in Spartanburg County. Sheriff Chuck Wright says it was a powerful mix.
Three men have been charged in the investigation: Michael Blackwell, 44, of Inman, Larry Hyder, 53, of Landrum, and Carroll Campbell, 72, also of Landrum. Wright say an undercover investigation began ten months ago when someone complained that Blackwell was selling moonshine from a roadside produce stand.
Officials say the illegal liquor was being produced in Landrum and was selling for about $30 a gallon. Thursday’s search warrant produced one illegal alcohol production system, approximately 1500 to 2000 gallons of illegal white alcohol, and enough product to produce approximately 200 more gallons at this time. Officials also seized 4 cars and $150,000.
