The owners of a Charleston store have agreed to a settlement with the families of firefighters killed in a 2007 fire at the Charleston store. Sofa Super Store owners agreed to pay $1.9 million to settle claims from the nine families of the “Fallen 9.” This payment will close the four-year battle between the families and the Charleston furniture store.
The Charleston Post and Courier reports the wrongful death suits alleged the store did not follow proper procedures or fire code violations. The claims also stated that the furniture and the store’s maze-like layout made it nearly impossible for the firefighters to find a way out. Lawyers for the store countered the suit, claiming “negligence and incompetence” on the city and fire leaders.
