Carolina Pride Foods, Inc. in Greenwood is recalling 18,000 pounds of ham after concerns the products may contain listeria contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service made the announcement Tuesday. The products were produced on May 13 and distributed throughout the Southeast to retail outlets and institutions. The discovery of the possible contamination was made by a third-party microbiological sampling contracted by Carolina Pride Foods. As of Wednesday morning, there have been no reported illnesses associated with eating the ham. Consumption of food contaminated with listeria can cause an uncommon, but potentially fatal disease. The disease is rarely contracted by healthy persons. if contracted, symptoms would include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea.
