The South Carolina National Guard’s 1221st returns after a year in Afghanistan and the loss of two of its members.
The 1221st Engineer Clearance Company has units in Graniteville and Batesburg. They have been deployed to Afghanistan since July 2010 on a mission to clear roadways for military convoys.
Two soldiers died in combat during the deployment, Sergeant Luther Rabon of Lexington and Staff Sergeant Willie Harley of Aiken were killed last October 1, when their vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
A welcome-home ceremony is scheduled for soldiers from the South Carolina National Guard’s 1221st Engineer Company when they return home July 10. The ceremony is scheduled to be at the Aiken Technical College gymnasium in Graniteville.
