Columbia will host an unusual presidential candidate event this Labor Day.
Senator Jim DeMint’s office announced he would help sponsor a forum for certain GOP candidates at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on September 5. Called “The Palmetto Freedom Forum,” its format features the candidates appearing on stage one at a time answering a series of questions from DeMint, Iowa Rep. Steve King, and Princeton professor Robert George.
In a statement, DeMint said the idea is to get the candidates’ positions on different issues and avoid “gotcha” questions and sound-bite responses. To be included, a candidate must reach at least 5 percent in a Realclearpolitics.com poll set to be released in August.
The forum will be televised by SCETV and will be moderated by former Columbia news anchor David Stanton.
