Laurens County Deputy Roger Rice, age 29, was shot and killed last night. The shooting happened at a home on Barrel Stave Road in Clinton during the search for 39-year-old Benny Ray Brown. Brown is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend outside the Fehrer Plant in Fountain Inn.
Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain spoke of their loss. “Just imagine what his wife and kids are actually feeling right now …and his whole family. It’s really tough. Such a young person, a life, just wasted.”
Chastain said they must continue with their jobs. “We’re assisting SLED in investigating this case, but Deputy Rice’s family, they’re really suffering, our prayers are with them and with the entire sheriff’s office.”
According to the sheriff, Rice had come in to help fill in for someone else. “We were just talking about Deputy Rice, how he’s always working. Actually, (he) was not scheduled to work tonight, but was out there filling in for somebody. Had a little bit of sleep, came in to work, doing what he loved to do.”
Brown, who was out on bond for charges of domestic violence, was taken to the hospital after being shot by deputies.
Deputy Rice had been with the department since January of last year and leaves behind a wife and two children.
