A tire manufacturer will be expanding its facility in Aiken County.
Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) says it will begin producing an additional 4,750 passenger and light truck tires per day beginning in the spring of 2013. Bridgestone Americas said Wednesday that it is a $135 million investment that is expected to create 122 jobs.
BATO President Larry Magee said, “Aiken County is the right place to expand our manufacturing footprint.” He said the demand for the tires has been increasing over the years and “now is the right time to increase capacity to meet the needs of our customers.”
In a statement, Governor Nikki Haley said she is excited about expansion, saying “our state has another reason to celebrate.”
The facility is currently 1.8 million square feet and employs more than 900 people. It first opened in 1998.
Officials said that the site preparation and construction for the new plant is set to begin this year. The facility is expected to be complete and running by 2013.
