South Carolina Democrats have renewed calls for Republican Lt. Gov. Ken Ard to resign immediately after an ethics investigation was referred to the state grand jury. Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian claims that GOP senators are cutting backroom deals on how Ard would be replaced
One of those mentioned by Democrats, Senator Larry Martin of Pickens, denies the accusations and says no one is making deals.
“It’s all in Mr. Harpootlian’s fantasy, I suppose” says Martin. “He would like for there to be back room deals going on, but I haven’t talked to but one or two senators who called me in reference to the first news articles that came out that came out that had my name. But I can promise you there is no ongoing discussion.”
Speculation centers around the fate of Lt. Gov. Ken Ard if he chooses, or is forced to, step down after his campaign spending case is reviewed by the grand jury. Ard admittedly spent campaign money on personal items but has now been questioned for misleading investigators.
