A 20-year-old University of South Carolina student, Roland Julius Maurer, was arrested Thursday night after police raided his home on Bull Street in downtown Columbia and found drugs, guns and money.
Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said officers had been tipped off by an email alerting them to suspicious activity at the house, with a lot of people coming and going from the location.
She said a Drug Suppression Team (DST) was sent out to the home and “there was a window that was either broken or partially open” and officers detected a smell of marijuana coming from inside.
Police said they could clearly see drug paraphernalia inside, so they obtained a warrant to enter the premises.
Authorities said they found three pounds of marijuana, four guns, and $16,000 in cash locked in a safe. Police said Maurer arrived at the scene later and was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell. According to officers, Maurer said the marijuana in plain view was his, but the rest was not.
Maurer was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
UPDATE: The charge against Maurer was dropped and expunged in July 2012 after he successfully completed a pretrial intervention. He has no previous criminal record.
