Authorities said a former state police agent shot and killed a woman before turning the gun on himself outside a Moncks Corner bank Friday afternoon.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the State Law Enforcement Division said 61-year-old Charlie Boyette shot 44-year-old Mary Ann Cox outside a bank where she worked. He then went behind the building and shot himself.
SLED officials said they had suspended Boyette Tuesday after he was accused of assaulting Cox in a domestic incident. At the time, Cox said she had just ended a yearlong romantic relationship with the officer. According to the police report, she told a sheriff’s deputy she did not want to press charges.
Officials say new SLED chief Mark Keel received a resignation from Boyette the next day. Boyette had worked at the agency since 2000.
Keel has asked Berkeley County deputies to investigate the case to avoid a conflict of interest.
