Despite law enforcement efforts to crack down on speeders and reckless driving across South Carolina, a portion of Interstate-26 is still among the deadliest highways in the state. The stretch of I-26 between the Jedburg exit, outside of Summerville, and the junction at I-95 is still considered one of the most deadly portions of highway in South Carolina.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol has tried to track down more speeders and distracted drivers on the interstate–but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some out there. The Charleston Post and Courier reports nine fatal wrecks have occurred on that part of the interstate so far this year–which is about the same as previous years.
Crews will now work on installing rumble strips along the left lane to serve as an alert to drivers who veer off the road or may have fallen asleep. Also, crews will repave about 16 miles of that stretch with a new 4-foot-wide shoulder.
