Myrtle Beach Republican Thad Viers announced he will run for South Carolina’s planned 7th congressional district representing Horry and the Pee Dee. South Carolina gained a 7th Congressional District and lawmakers have agreed that it should cover the northeastern corner of the state.
The next step–to find a congressman to fill that seat. State Representative Thad Viers says he will run for the district. Viers told the AP the district needs a conservative who looks forward to future generations, and he’s just the candidate to do it. The district is known to be predominantly Republican.
Other candidates mentioned in the media recently as interested in the same seat: Horry State Representative Alan Clemmons, Mande Wilkes, who recently ran for a House seat, and Georgetown County businessman Jim Mader.
The governor signed legislation approving the new district, but the U.S. Justice Department still has to approve it because of the state’s embattled civil rights history.
